Photographs

When I first visited the Monastery of Santa Clara a Velha in the Summer of 1993, the site was abandoned.
There was an old and rusty fence with countless holes, which was intended to prevent any unauthorised access, but it was useless.
In the photo of the left nave, the wood board I used to enter the church is visible at the rear.

At the time the church was flooded with water and mood and the cloister was barely detectable.

I had recently bought my first reflex camera and I was limited by lack of experience, knowledge and equipment. I took about a dozen of photos, and only five are acceptable. I added two other photos from my friend Pascale Van Landuyt.

Returning to the Monastery one year later, I found the fence repaired and it was no longer possible to enter freely and look around.

Now I'm awaiting the end of the restoration works to visit it again.Meanwhile, I recommend the web site Santa a Clara a Velha (in English and Portuguese), designed and maintained by the Centro de Computação Gráfica of University of Coimbra.
