The primitive church flooded

The banks of Mondego river are made of sand and mood deposits, which are flooded regularly.

The soft ground did not resist to the pressure of the stone building and it sank slowly throughout the centuries.

Today, the Monastery foundations are below the Mondego level and a pumping system is required to remove the water that drains from the soil and accumulates in the premises.
