My name is João da Silva Gomes Mota, I'm Portuguese, born in 1970 in Lisbon, Portugal, where I live.
I graduated in Electrical Engineering by IST-Instituto Superior Técnico, in Lisbon, with a specialisation in Telecommunications and Electronics. I'm now concluding the Master of Science in Robotics. I'm working on the Lisbon pole of the ISR-Institute for Systems and Robotics, a research unit of the IST.
My professional interests include Mobile Robotics, reconstruction of three dimensional spaces, interfaces for remote operation and the integration of these subjects with Internet.Beyond the professional activities I'm interested in the History of Portugal,Nature walks, photography and Web design.

I work at the LRM-Mobile Robotics Lab, under the supervision of Professor Maria Isabel Ribeiro. My main area of research on mobile robotics developed within the scope of RESOLV project, for which I designed the laser based localisation system.
The localisation system computes the position and orientation of a mobile robot on the plane, using a Laser Scanner to acquire a horizontal profile of the surroundings. Two algorithms were developed, the second algorithm refines the results of the first one:
The maximum error expected for localisation is below 3cm (1.2in) and 0.2º, in regular indoor environments such as home or offices.
The publications below present the research work developed. Some are available for download.
I also created interactive presentations for the papers I presented at conferences. I believe they are a good introduction to the papers, overcoming the constraints of paper explanations.
Note: The presentations were created for versions 4.0 or later of Netscape Navigator e Internet Explorer, or compatible and JavaScript should be enabled in order to see the dynamic content. Notwithstanding, the majority of the contents may be read with a 3.0 browser, skipping the dynamic
pages.

As an amateur of photography a created the following albums. The navigation aids are different from album to album. Even if you can't read the language, just follow the arrows and you'll be able to browse the pages.
Note: The albums require different versions of Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer or compatibles. Activation of JavaScript is also required.

Through the years, I visited many Web sites, read several Web design books and on-line columns. I designed two sites, mine and the Mobile Robotics Lab's which have been improved as I acquired new skills. While learning Web Design I took a close look at the capabilities of JavaScript and Dynamic HTML (DHTML), introduced by versions 4.0 of Netscape Navigator e Internet Explorer. Below there are two experiments based on JavaScript and DHTML.
