close album   Garcia de Orta was a portuguese natural philosopher, in the 16th century terms. He left Portugal quite young, perhaps escaping the anti-jew laws, and went to India and South East Asia (Malaca, in modern Malaysia, etc). He studied botanics, medicine and ethnography.
